Free Training Course

about the course

Our course is specifically aimed at new learners who have not been to specialist music schools or university, and those struggling with conventional college or further education. With a particular focus on providing opportunity to individuals from less well funded areas of London, as well as under represented minorities, we have just received Arts Council funding to provide a series of 8 week intensive studio training programmes. No previous experience or qualifications are necessary to participate. These are practical, hands on, activity led courses. They are tailored to teach the real life recording studio environment and prepare individuals for entry level positions in recording studios.

What it looks like

The course will operate in our studio and has the following schedule:

  • 3 students per course

  • 2 days per week (10am - 6pm, one hour lunch break)

  • 16 days in total

  • 8 weeks from start to end

  • A minimum of 2 days recording a real life band

  • 2 days of work experience in another commercial studio (if available)

  • 112 hours of teaching time in total

What you will learn

As well as the basics of studio etiquette and people management, the course will teach you about signal flow, microphone functionality, recording techniques, analogue and digital conversion and functions of a patch bay (to name a few): and of course, how to apply these in the real world recording environment. As a student, you will also receive:

  • A discounted/free plugin bundle

  • Continued mentorship for 12 months

  • Free/discounted studio access (when available)

  • A laptop to work on (if required)

Full day-by-day breakdown of the course is available to view here.

what we need from you

This course requires no previous experience and no prior qualifications. But what we DO need from you is:

  • Attentiveness and a willingness to learn

  • An interest in music, production, engineering or recording studios

  • An open mind - studio life is not always what people expect!

  • Honesty - if you’re struggling with something, just shout. A class size of 3 means that individual attention is always possible.

  • Respect - the studio is full of extremely valuable equipment. Disrespect of any form will not be tolerated.

  • Punctuality - this course is designed to teach you how a real life studio operates and will include sessions with real musicians and bands. Good time keeping is essential!
